Rudder injuries force Britain’s Alex Thomson out of the Vendée Globe

Alex Thomson’s bid for the Vendee Globe glory ended on Saturday when the British skipper had to retire with rudder damage to his boat.

Thomson, one of the favorites to win the singles round, is now breastfeeding his boat, Hugo Boss, back to the port of Cape Town.

“Unfortunately, it is not possible to repair,” Thomson told organizers.

“We accept because this will be the end of the race for us. Of course, myself, my team and our partners are deeply disappointed.”
