Somali Party Slams US Embassy For Supporting Controversial Galmudug Poll

The Forum for National Parties, led by former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, has strongly criticised the US Embassy in Somalia for supporting the election of Ahmed Abdi Kariye aka Qoor Qoor as president of Galmudug regional state.

“The FNP was dismayed by the statement of the US ambassador to Somalia, Mr Donald Yamamoto, in which he unwisely legitimised a fraudulent and manifestly corrupt electoral process bereft of inclusivity,” a press statement by the FNP partly read.

Qoor Qoor’s election on 2 February in Dusamareb was rejected by four Galmudug presidential candidates, outgoing Galmudug president, Ahmed Duale Haaf and the influential Islamist group, Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama’ah.

He was the federal government’s candidate for the poll. “The FNP categorically rejects the US ambassador’s statement and underlines that, in doing so, he surrendered his privilege as an honest and impartial diplomat who leverages his weight to foster dialogue among Somalis,” the FNP statement added.

The US embassy congratulated Qoor Qoor for the election win. On Sunday, Wadajir Party Leader Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame said it will be difficult for the Somali people to see the US as an impartial partner following the decision.
