Mauricio Pochettino was replaced by José Mourinho on the Spurs bench and said he was “very pleased” with the appointment of the Portuguese.
Pochettino was looted by Spurs in November, the club that occupied the 14th place in the Premier League. He was replaced by Mourinho, who has since moved the Spurs to eighth place before the championship is suspended in March due to coronavirus.
Pochettino says he and Mourinho shared a friendship that goes back to their time in Spain, when the Portuguese were at Real Madrid and Argentina at Espanyol.
During this period, Pochettino was largely linked to Mourinho’s work at Real Madrid, but the former Spurs boss belittled these bands by saying: “My kids sleep in Espanyol pajamas every night, so it’s very hard for me to think about changing clubs.”
Mourinho sent a gift to Pochettino during the duo’s stay in Spain, marking the beginning of a friendship that continues today.
“It was a very nice bottle of French red wine for me and two Real Madrid kitssaid Pochettino. José said, “OK, it’s for your children from now on.”
“We have had a good relationship since then and I am very happy that he is in Tottenham to replace me. I am also happy to have left the club in the state we left him and he is really very grateful for how we helped to build the club, which is now his club. “
Pochettino added: “I always thought I would replace him. He was at Real Madrid. I told him, ‘Oh, maybe one day I can take your place at Real Madrid’, but look at how life is going. I took my place at Tottenham. Great, huh? “
He also revealed that during this period without a job, he talked to people like Mourinho and Unai Emery as he looks to refine his strategy for his return to the game. In fact, Pochettino said he had been spotted at a cafe with former Arsenal engineer Emery, which attracted some curious people.
“Before the pandemic, I and Jesus (Perez, his former Spurs assistant) met Unai for a cup of coffee, to talk and share our experiences”, he added.
“We worked in different clubs, we were with the enemy, and people went by saying, ‘Unai, Pochettino and Jesus are now sharing a coffee!’ It was at Cockfosters [dans le nord de Londres]. It was very fun.
“It was an incredible moment to review and analyze everything: training sessions, matches, our method, our training models … to design specific and collective work. And of course try to adapt to new normal, be prepared for all events, as the requirements will to be completely different.
“We are waiting impatiently for the next position. Football is very dynamic and you have to be ready for the moment the offer is displayed. We are ready. After six months our thoughts are completely filled.”
