Manchester City has everything it takes to win the Champions League according to Mahrez

The citizen winger believes in a victory of the double defending English champion on the European stage after the recovery.

Riyadh Mahrez believes everything is in place for Manchester City to win the Champions League this season. The Covid-19 pandemic stopped football in Europe in March, but it is hoped the competition will resume in August.

Manchester City have a good chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the competition after their 2-1 away win over Real Madrid last February in the first round of 16, and Mahrez says there is no reason why they should not be able to lift the cup for for the first time in club history.

“I think it’s a good time to win the Champions League, the 29-year-old said. We have the team, we have the coach, we have everything, so it’s a good time.

“I don’t know if we are the best, but we are good enough to win it. The Champions League is difficult, everyone wants to win it, so it will be a big fight.”

Pep Guardiola downplayed his team’s chances of winning the competition and emphasized that it is difficult without the experience of European heavyweights like his former clubs from Bayern Munich and Barcelona. But Mahrez was a series winner last year, after winning three trophies with City and then adding the African Cup of Nations as captain of Algeria.

The winger got a spectacular free kick in the last minute of the semi-final victory over Nigeria, the country won the trophy for the first time in 29 years.

“The feeling was incredible, he explained. It was a dream for me and for my teammates in the team. Making my country happy and proud of us as we did was incredible. I’m still watching [le but] sometimes. It was a great honor to make this goal and I was very proud. There are no words to describe this.

“When you are there in the competition you don’t really see the effect, you do with the team. After you know the effect and what it means for the Arabs and the African people. I just try to try my best and make people proud.”

Mahrez has resumed training with the first team for a week. The Premier League is expected to return on June 17 with Arsenal’s visit to Skyblues.

“It was a little long without football, but we adapted and now we’re back, so it’s good, he added. With the pandemic we had to do it [nous entraîner à la maison et faire des sessions en ligne avec le groupe] and now that we’re back in training, it’s fantastic.

“It was good to see my teammates and coaches. It was good to train with everyone.”
