Outgoing President of Burundi Pierre Nkurunziza’s death

The outgoing president of Burundi Pierre Nkurunziza is dead, the victim of a heart attack, the Burundian government announced on Twitter on Tuesday. According to Belgian daily Le Soir, he was admitted to Karusi hospital in the center of the country.

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza died on Monday at the age of 55 following a “cardiac arrest”, the Burundian Presidency announced Tuesday in a press release.

“The government of the Republic of Burundi announces with great sadness to the Burundians and the international community that his excellence Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi, unexpectedly occurred at the Cinquantenaire Hospital in Karuzi, following a cardiac arrest,” the statement said.

Cardiac Arrest

The text describes the last days of President Nkurunziza: after participating in a volleyball match on Saturday, June 6, he felt ill at night 6-7 and “went to the hospital quickly”.

“On Sunday, his health improved and he talked to the people who were next to him,” the statement said.

“To everyone’s big surprise” in the morning “Monday, June 8, 2020, his health condition suddenly changed with a cardiac arrest”.

“Despite intensive, continuous and appropriate treatment, the medical team was unable to recover the patient,” added the press release, adding that the interdisciplinary medical team tried “several hours” to revive him.

Pierre Nkurunziza has chaired the fate of Burundi, one of the poorest countries on the planet, since 2005. On May 20, his successor and designated dolphin, Evariste Ndayishimiye, was elected to replace him as head of state, Pierre Nkurunziza had decided not to run for re-election . His mandate would end in August.

His candidacy for a highly controversial third term in 2015 had thrown his country into a major political crisis that left more than 1,200 dead and forced 400,000 Burundians into exile.

It was unknown Tuesday about the cardiac arrest to which Pierre Nkurunziza died was the result of a Covid-19 infection. Pierre Nkurunziza’s wife had recently been submitted to Nairobi for treatment, some sources in Bujumbura claim that she had received the new coronavirus.

In its press release, the government announced seven days of national grief as of Tuesday. Elected in May, future President ÉvaristeNdayishimiye must be invested in August.
