André Ayew corker puts Ghana 1-0 against Gabon in the battle for knockouts

A cracking 25-yard goal by ex-Marseille striker André Ayew put Ghana 1-0 up against Gabon in the 18th minute as the two teams battled for a chance in the knockout rounds. Follow the events on FRANCE 24’s live blog below.

Ghana has one of the best track records in African football. They have won the Africa Cup of Nations four times and two five times – most recently in 2015. They also went on to a fantastic victory in the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals, and were only denied a place in the semis thanks to Luis Suarez’s handball late in overtime (or “the rescue of the tournament “, as the Uruguay striker put it).

But Gabon is a future perspective in the African game, which showed its stripes with a sure opening win against the Comoros. If they win tonight, they will go straight to the knockout rounds – but Ghana stands for a formidable battle.
