NUP Leaders Joel Ssenyonyi and Lewis Rubongoya Detained in Uganda

Joel Ssenyonyi and Lewis Rubongoya, spokesperson and Secretary General of the National Unity Platform respectively, have been detained by security forces at the party headquarters in Kamwokya.

They were at the party headquarters for the anticipated 61st independence day address to the nation by NUP president, Robert Kyagulanyi.

However, they were intercepted and arrested by a joint team of police and army personnel before reaching the party headquarters.

The two are currently held at Kira Road police station.

Since the announcement of a one million march to Entebbe Airport to welcome their returning president, the NUP headquarters in Kamwokya has been under siege by the army and police.

Upon his arrival at the airport, Kyagulanyi was immediately apprehended and transported to his residence in Magere, Wakiso district.

A heavy deployment has been maintained around his home since then.
