Somali government proposes to disband C6+ team in Xalane

Jun 12 (Jowhar) The Somali government has revoked the legitimacy of the role of the International Community known as C6+ in Somalia’s internal affairs, according to a letter issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The letter, which was forwarded to James Swan, stated that the C6+ role was originally intended for the transitional period when Somalia was in its infancy and government institutions were still in their infancy, but now that the government is fully functioning, there is no reason for the International Community to play a direct role in internal politics.

Therefore, the Somali government has recognized C6+ as a defunct structure that no longer serves the purpose for which it was originally established, and has called on the international community to engage with Somalia through mutually agreed mechanisms and legal institutions.

The Ministry’s letter further emphasized Somalia’s commitment to maintaining constructive and respectful diplomatic relations with all international partners. It noted that the government welcomes continued support for its development, security, and humanitarian objectives, but insisted that such cooperation must respect the sovereignty and legal frameworks of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The statement also urged members of the C6+ group—including the United Nations, African Union, European Union, United States, United Kingdom, Turkey, and others—to coordinate their engagements through established Somali government channels.

The government reiterated its readiness to participate in multilateral dialogues that are based on mutual respect and transparency, while stressing that all external involvement should align with Somalia’s constitution and national priorities.

This move marks a significant shift in Somalia’s approach to foreign engagement, underscoring the government’s intention to assert greater control over its internal affairs and decision-making processes. The letter concluded by expressing hope that international partners would respect Somalia’s position and continue to support its progress through appropriate frameworks.
