Mexico Takes Legal Action Against Google Over ‘Gulf of America’ Designation – Leader
Mexico has initiated legal action against Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’ for users of Google Maps in the United States, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum.
“The lawsuit has been filed,” Ms. Sheinbaum stated during her morning news briefing, without disclosing the details of where or when it was submitted.
Recently, US lawmakers approved the name change, solidifying it into federal law as part of an executive order issued by President Donald Trump during his first week in office in January.
In February, Ms. Sheinbaum had cautioned Google, a subsidiary of tech giant Alphabet, that she was contemplating legal proceedings unless the company reverted its decision.
Claudia Sheinbaum announced that a lawsuit has been initiated.
“All we seek is compliance with the decree issued by the US government,” Ms. Sheinbaum remarked.
She added, “The US government refers to only the section of the US continental shelf as the Gulf of America, not the entire gulf, as it lacks the authority to name the whole gulf.”
In a response to Mr. Trump, Ms. Sheinbaum humorously proposed referring to the United States as “Mexican America,” highlighting a historical map from before 1848, when one-third of her nation was taken by the United States.
The two countries are currently engaged in discussions to ease tensions arising from Mr. Trump’s global trade policies, which have included a series of tariffs aimed at Mexico.
