A woman was fatally struck in an axe assault yesterday evening on the campus of the University of Warsaw in Poland’s capital.

According to local media, a 53-year-old woman was targeted by a 22-year-old male law student.

The woman succumbed to her injuries immediately at the scene.

The assailant was captured shortly after the incident by an officer belonging to Poland’s state protection service at the site.

This officer was part of a state security detail accompanying Polish Justice Minister Adam Bodnar during his visit to the university.

A 39-year-old male security guard, who attempted to intervene, sustained injuries at the scene. He is currently hospitalized and emergency services have reported his condition as stable.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack.

The assailant remains in police custody, and Warsaw’s regional prosecutor’s office indicated that additional information regarding the incident will be released later today.

In response, the University of Warsaw has canceled today’s lectures and declared a day of mourning.
