Inside the Issues: Gaza Aid Blockade, EBU’s Eurovision Pressure, and the Conclave

In the latest episode of Behind the Story, the new podcast from RTÉ News, Katie Hannon, Fran McNulty, and David McCullagh delve into the situation in Gaza.

Conditions are deteriorating further for those affected—starvation is rampant due to the aid blockade, and Israeli politicians are openly discussing plans to assert control over the territory, potentially displacing Palestinians.

Recent footage reaching news outlets worldwide depicts people scrambling for food, while others mourn over bodies shrouded in white blankets, visibly shattered by grief.

Yesterday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated that Israel’s blockade “clearly constitutes a war crime.” Today, Ireland, along with five other nations, issued a joint statement declaring the plan a “dangerous new escalation.”

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit the Middle East next week, and there are expectations that Israel will proceed with its military strategy afterward.

“What we have been witnessing is horrific, and we are now reaching a tipping point where intervention is necessary, as it has simply gone too far, and many countries are echoing this sentiment,” Fran remarked.

“The images we have seen on our screens over the past 19 months are indescribably horrific. However, seeing starving children elevates this to a new level,” Katie expressed.

The group also discusses the controversy surrounding Israel’s participation in Eurovision next week, following news that RTÉ’s Director General Kevin Bakhurst requested a dialogue with the European Broadcasting Union on the matter.

Fran further shares insights about the conclave in Rome as he monitors the chimney above the Sistine Chapel.

You can listen to David, Katie, and Fran’s commentary on the situation on Behind the Story, available on the RTÉ Radio Player.
